Cape Town screening of Occupy Love

An alternative Valentine’s Day celebration

Tired of spending yet another Valentine’s Day following the commercialized playbook of the greeting card industry? Why not break out of the stereotyped mould and do something different and exciting this year by celebrating love on a global scale?

Join us for an alternative take on Valentine’s Day with a screening of the inspiring feature documentary Occupy Love.

Occupy Love will be screened at 6.15pm on Friday 24 February 2014 (Valentine’s Day) at the Labia Theatre on Orange Street, Cape Town.

We live in a world plagued by economic, environmental and political crisis. In Occupy Love, acclaimed director Velcrow Ripper asks: “how could the crisis we’re facing become a love story?” It may sound like a rather strange story at first, but in his beautifully conceived new documentary film, Ripper takes us on a journey deep inside the revolution of the heart that is erupting around the planet.

Occupy Love explores the growing realization that the dominant system of power is failing to provide us with health, happiness or meaning. The old paradigm that concentrates wealth, founded on the greed of the few, is causing economic and ecological collapse. The resulting crisis has become the catalyst for a profound awakening: millions of people are deciding that enough is enough – the time has come to create a new world, a world that works for all life.

The film connects the dots in this era of rapidly evolving social change, featuring captivating insider scenes from the Egyptian Revolution, the Indignado uprising in Spain, Occupy Wall Street in New York, indigenous activists at the Alberta Tar Sands, the climate justice movement, and beyond.

Woven throughout the action oriented backbone of the film is a deep exploration of public love, and compelling stories of an emerging new paradigm. It features some of the world’s key visionaries on alternative systems of economics, sustainability and empathy, including Naomi Klein, Bill McKibben, Jeremy Rifkin, bell hooks and Charles Eisenstein.

Occupy Love is a moving, transformative, heartfelt film, featuring Ripper’s signature stunning visuals and rich soundscapes.  A powerful cinematic experience that will leave audiences inspired – don’t miss it!

This event is presented by While You Were Sleeping, a Cape Town-based non-profit collective committed to bringing documentaries with important social and environmental messages to South African audiences. The screening takes place in partnership with the Labia and the Secret Love Project (www.facebook.com/SecretLoveProject2014), a social engineering experiment aimed at altering the collective consciousness of an entire city through subliminal programming, inspired by Derren Brown and conceptualised and initiated by Cape Town artist Michael Elion.
